Ubuntu 17.04 “Zesty Zapus” Released

Adam Conrad has announced the release of Ubuntu 17.04. The latest release of Ubuntu features nine months of support and security updates. The new release includes version 4.10 of the Linux kernel as well as driverless printing to supported devices. Support for 32-bit PowerPC computers has been dropped and new installations will, by default, be set up using a swap file instead of a swap partition for added flexibility. “Under the hood, there have been updates to many core packages, including a new 4.10-based kernel, and much more. Ubuntu Desktop has seen incremental improvements, with newer versions of GTK+ and Qt, updates to major packages like Firefox and LibreOffice, and stability improvements to Unity. Ubuntu Server 17.04 includes the Ocata release of OpenStack, alongside deployment and management tools that save DevOps teams time when deploying distributed applications – whether on private clouds, public clouds, x86, ARM, or POWER servers, zSystem mainframes, or on developer laptops.

Ubuntu 16.10 “Yakkety Yak” Released

13 October 2016 – Canonical has announced the release of a new version of its popular Ubuntu operating system. The latest version, Ubuntu 16.10, offers users many updated packages, a preview session of the Unity 8 desktop environment and version 4.8 of the Linux kernel. The distribution also features LibreOffice 5.2 and the update manager application now shows changelogs from enabled personal package archives (PPAs). “Network performance is a primary focus of this release, with updated versions of Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK), OpenVSwitch (OVS) and virtualization technologies, all able to handle critical application traffic for lower latency and greater throughput. Ubuntu 16.10 and the corresponding updates to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS further enhance Ubuntu’s position as the leading private cloud infrastructure operating system, with OpenStack Newton, DPDK, enhanced OpenVSwitch and LXD machine containers alongside regular KVM based VM guests. Ubuntu 16.10 previews Canonical’s device convergence vision.

Guix System Distribution 0.10.0 – GNU/Linux

Ludovic Courtès has announced the release of a new version of the Guix System Distribution (GuixSD).
GuixSD is a GNU/Linux distribution committed to respecting and enhancing the freedom of its users. As such, it adheres to the GNU Free System Distribution Guidelines.
GNU Guix is a functional package manager for the GNU system. In addition to standard package management features, Guix supports transactional upgrades and roll-backs, unprivileged package management, per-user profiles, and garbage collection. Guix uses low-level mechanisms from the Nix package manager, except that packages are defined as native Guile modules, using extensions to the Scheme language. GuixSD offers a declarative approach to operating system configuration management, and is highly customizable and hackable.
As of version 0.10.0, the Guix System Distribution can be installed on an i686 or x86_64 machine. It uses the Linux-Libre kernel and the GNU Shepherd init system. Alternately, its package manager, GNU Guix, can be installed as an additional package manager on top of an installed Linux-based system.
It is also possible to use Guix on top of an already installed GNU/Linux system, including on mips64el and armv7.
Ludovic Courtès has announced the release of a new version. It offers reproducible builds for several key packages, plus the GNOME desktop environment and over 600 new packages in the project’s repositories. “It’s been almost five months since the previous release, and many things happened! The highlights include: Our grafting mechanism for security updates has been fixed to be generally applicable. Read this post for more information on the challenges behind this. Substitutes are now fetched by default over HTTPS and from a faster mirror. A number of packages have been made bit-for-bit reproducible, including glibc, Perl, Emacs packages, and Python packages. This work was simplified by Guix challenge and by the new –check and –rounds build options, and also by the insight gathered from other reproducible builds efforts. GNOME is now available, via the gnome-desktop-service procedure. 639 new packages, about as many package updates, greatly simplified by the addition of new importers and auto-updaters. A wealth of bug fixes, documentation improvements, Emacs niceties, and more!

Kali Linux Release 2016.1- Rolling Edition

Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution that ships with a collection of security and forensics utilities. The distribution recently shifted from issuing fixed releases to a rolling release model. The project has announced the launch of Kali Linux 2016.1, the first version of the distribution’s new rolling release series. “Today marks an important milestone for us with the first public release of our Kali Linux rolling distribution. Kali switched to a rolling release model back when we hit version 2.0 (codename `sana’), however the rolling release was only available via an upgrade from 2.0 to kali-rolling for a select brave group. After five months of testing our rolling distribution (and its supporting infrastructure), we’re confident in its reliability – giving our users the best of all worlds – the stability of Debian, together with the latest versions of the many outstanding penetration testing tools created and shared by the information security community.

Upgrade From Kali 2.0 to Kali Rolling

Migrating from Kali sana (2.0) to Kali rolling is simple. As root, you can run the following commands and be on your way:

Kali Linux 2.0 Now is a Rolling Distribution

The developers of Kali Linux, a forensics and security distribution based on Debian, have released Kali Linux 2.0. One of the big changes in the latest version of Kali is that the distribution has shifted to a rolling release model. “One of the biggest moves we’ve taken to keep Kali 2.0 up-to-date in a global, continuous manner, is transforming Kali into a rolling distribution. What this means is that we are pulling our packages continuously from Debian Testing (after making sure that all packages are installable) — essentially upgrading the Kali core system, while allowing us to take advantage of newer Debian packages as they roll out. This move is where our choice in Debian as a base system really pays off — we get to enjoy the stability of Debian, while still remaining on the cutting edge.” The new release of Kali Linux is available in 32-bit and 64-bit x86 builds as well ARM builds.

How Do I Upgrade to Kali 2.0?

Yes, you can upgrade Kali 1.x to Kali 2.0! To do this, you will need to edit your source.list entries, and run a dist-upgrade as shown below. If you have been using incorrect or extraneous Kali repositories or otherwise manually installed or overwritten Kali packages outside of apt, your upgrade to Kali 2.0 may fail. This includes scripts like lazykali.sh, PTF, manual git clones in incorrect directories, etc. – All of these will clobber existing files on the filesystem and result in a failed upgrade. If this is the case for you, you’re better off reinstalling your OS from scratch.
Otherwise, feel free to:
cat << EOF > /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security/ sana/updates main contrib non-free
EOF

apt-get update
