4MLinux 20.0 STABLE released – RescueKit – Antivirus Live CD – BakAndImgCD – TheSSS

1 November 2016. The 4MLinux project has announced the availability of a new release. The new version, 4MLinux 20.0, supports booting in a range of environments and the distribution now works with both legacy BIOS and modern UEFI-enabled computers. The new release also features several package upgrades: “The status of the 4MLinux 20.0 series has been changed to STABLE. Create your documents with LibreOffice 5.2.3.2 and GIMP 2.8.18, share them using Dropbox 12.4.22, surf the Internet with Firefox 49.0.2 and Chromium 53.0.2785.143, stay in touch with your friends via Skype 4.3.0.37 and Thunderbird 45.4.0, enjoy your music collection with Audacious 3.8 and aTunes 3.1.2, watch your favorite videos with MPlayer SVN-r37881 and VLC 2.2.4, play games with Mesa 12.0.1, WINE 1.9.20 support enabled. You can also setup the 4MLinux LAMP Server (Linux 4.4.27, Apache 2.4.23, MariaDB 10.1.18, and PHP 5.6.27). Perl 5.24.0 and Python 2.7.12 are also available. 4MLinux now supports all possible boot options: BIOS with 32-bit CPU, BIOS with 64-bit CPU, UEFI with 32-bit firmware, and UEFI with 64-bit firmware.

Ubuntu 16.10 “Yakkety Yak” Released

13 October 2016 – Canonical has announced the release of a new version of its popular Ubuntu operating system. The latest version, Ubuntu 16.10, offers users many updated packages, a preview session of the Unity 8 desktop environment and version 4.8 of the Linux kernel. The distribution also features LibreOffice 5.2 and the update manager application now shows changelogs from enabled personal package archives (PPAs). “Network performance is a primary focus of this release, with updated versions of Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK), OpenVSwitch (OVS) and virtualization technologies, all able to handle critical application traffic for lower latency and greater throughput. Ubuntu 16.10 and the corresponding updates to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS further enhance Ubuntu’s position as the leading private cloud infrastructure operating system, with OpenStack Newton, DPDK, enhanced OpenVSwitch and LXD machine containers alongside regular KVM based VM guests. Ubuntu 16.10 previews Canonical’s device convergence vision.

5 August 2016 – Adam Conrad has announced the release of Ubuntu 14.04.5, code-named “Trusty Tahr”, the fifth maintenance update of the distribution’s long-term support version originally released in April 2014 and supported with security updates until April 2019: “The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS (Long-Term Support) for its Desktop, Server, Cloud and Core products, as well as other flavours of Ubuntu with long-term support. As usual, this point release includes many updates, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation.

CentOS 6.8 released! – GNU/Linux

25/06/2016 – Johnny Hughes has announced the release of CentOS 6.8, a community distribution which is built using the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The new release features a number of important changes, including depreciated drivers and packages as well as new features. “CentOS Linux 6.8 is derived from source code released by Red Hat, Inc. for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.8. All upstream variants have been placed into one combined repository to make it easier for end users. Workstation, server, and minimal installs can all be done from our combined repository. All of our testing is only done against this combined distribution. There are many fundamental changes in this release, compared with the past CentOS Linux 6 releases, and we highly recommend everyone study the upstream release notes as well as the upstream technical notes about the changes and how they might impact your installation.

CentOS-6.8-x86_64-LiveCD.iso – The disk can also be used to install CentOS 6.8 onto your computer but without offering any package selection options at install time.
CentOS-6.8-x86_64-LiveDVD.iso – The disk can also be used to install CentOS 6.8 onto your computer but without offering any package selection options at install time.
CentOS-6.8-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso and CentOS-6.8-x86_64-bin-DVD2.iso –  These two dvd images contain the entire base distribution. Please burn DVD1 onto a DVD and boot your computer off it. A basic install will not need DVD2. After the installation is complete, please run “yum update” in order to update your system.
CentOS-6.8-x86_64-minimal.iso – The aim of this image is to install a very basic CentOS 6.8 system, with the minimum of packages needed to have a functional system.
CentOS-6.8-x86_64-netinstall.iso –  This is the network install and rescue image.
One can do USB key installs by using dd to copy individual ISO files to a USB key using the device name (not the partition name). This will overwrite the entire USB key. Here is an example for the DVD1:
dd if=CentOS-6.8-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso of=/dev/sdb

22/04/2016 – The OpenIndiana project, which is a continuation of OpenSolaris, has released a new version of the community-maintained operating system. The new release offers a number of improvements to package management and includes several package updates to such desktop applications as Firefox, Thunderbird and VLC. “New nlipkg zone brand was introduced, which behaves like old ipkg brand (i.e. it doesn’t check child and parent images for consistency). It’s possible to convert ipkg zone to nlipkg one. To do so, install system/zones/brand/nlipkg, change zone’s brand to nlipkg and remove /var/pkg/linked inside zone. Closed sysidtool which could be used to set initial system parameters on first boot and initialize zone’s configuration was replaced with sysding. All other packages from closed admin incorporation were also removed…

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus – Finally is here!

Canonical has announced the availability of Ubuntu 16.04. The new version of Ubuntu is a long term support release, meaning it will receive security updates for the next five years. Some of the big changes in this release include support for the “snap” package format; Snappy packages can be installed alongside traditional Deb packages. Python 2 is no longer installed by default, but can be found in the distribution’s software repositories. This release is the first to feature built-in ZFS support. “Ubuntu 16.04 LTS introduces a new application format, the ‘snap’, which can be installed alongside traditional Deb packages. These two packaging formats live quite comfortably next to one another and enable Ubuntu to maintain its existing processes for development and updates.

The 4MLinux project has started the new year with the release of 4MLinux 15.0. The 4MLinux project produces a small sized, independently developed, multi-purpose distribution. The new 15.0 release features mostly software updates.
4MLinux 15.0 stable released. The status of the 4MLinux 15.0 series has been changed to stable. Major change in the core of the system, which now includes GNU C Library 2.22. As a response to the requests from 4MLinux users, the following applications have been added: Audacity (digital audio editor), GNU GRUB (boot loader), InfraRecorder (CD/DVD writing program), LXInput and LXRandR (small yet powerful setup tools from the LXDE project). Additionally, an important change in the 4MLinux LAMP Server, which now uses Postfix to handle emails sent via PHP mail. More details can be found on the release announcement

4MLinux 13.1 stable released ! Antivirus Live CD – BakAndImgCD – The Smallest Server Suite

The 4MLinux project, which creates a minimal rescue and utility distribution, has released 4MLinux 13.1. The new release ships with the GTK+ 3 libraries and the X display server has been rebuilt to provide better 3-D support. “I am happy to announce that the stable version of 4MLinux 13.1 is ready for download. Four major changes in this release: the Linux 3.18 LTS kernel series is now included in the core of the system, the GTK+ 3.x series has been added, Mesa and X.Org have been totally rebuilt to ensure full 3D support for modern video cards, and the so called Legacy Installer (which makes it possible to install 4MLinux on old computers) has been included in the 4MLinux installation CD.

Korora 22 codename “Selina” is released

generic-laptop-korora-gnome-desktopChris Smart has announced the release of Korora 22, a set of user-friendly, Fedora-based desktop Linux distributions with a choice of Cinnamon, GNOME, KDE 5, MATE and Xfce desktops: It has been a long road to the Korora 22 (code name ‘Selina’) release and we’re sorry that it has taken so long. However, it is now finally available for download. KDE 4 is no longer supported in Korora 22. If you do not wish to upgrade to KDE 5 then please stick with Korora 21. With this release we’ve decided to no-longer include Adobe Flash out of the box, due to the continued high number of security flaws. The repository is still enabled, however, and if you wish to use Flash you can install it using the package manager, or command line ‘sudo dnf install flash-plugin’ – or install and use Google Chrome which has the current up-to-date version of Flash.

Debian GNU/Hurd 2015 released

The GNU H is what is commonly meant when people are talking about GNU/Hurd systems.
This system has mostly been designed and implemented It works and is usable. For example, these web pages have been rendered on a GNU/Hurd system.
You can try it out for yourself: for getting access, installing Debian GNU/Hurd will probably be the easiest and most feature-complete solution. If you don’t have spare hardware to use for doing so, you can also get a shell account on a public Hurd machine. Depending on the things you’re going to work on (and on your internet connection), this may be an easy way of getting used to Hurd systems. Installing in a virtual machine is another possibility, see the page about running a Hurd system for the full story. In particular, running a Debian GNU/Hurd QEMU image may be a viable alternative.
