ReactOS 0.4.4 Released – The NT Kernel Family

16 February 2017: ReactOS is an open source operating system which seeks to be binary compatible with Microsoft Windows, capable of running Windows applications. The project’s latest release, ReactOS 0.4.4, introduces printing support and offers several visual improvements and graphical fixes. “Today marks the fifth release of the ReactOS 0.4.x series, as well as the fifth following the 4 month release cycle started by 0.4.0 itself. Progress has continued steadily, with a great deal of work going on in the background to improve ReactOS’ general usability and stability. Many of these improvements were on display at the FOSDEM convention in Brussels that took place on the 4th and 5th of this month. Certainly one of the more notable albeit less visible additions was the incorporation of basic printing support by Colin Finck. At present ReactOS is only capable of sending print commands to a parallel port printer, but this is the first step towards universal support and Colin should be applauded for his effort.

Ubuntu 16.10 “Yakkety Yak” Released

13 October 2016 – Canonical has announced the release of a new version of its popular Ubuntu operating system. The latest version, Ubuntu 16.10, offers users many updated packages, a preview session of the Unity 8 desktop environment and version 4.8 of the Linux kernel. The distribution also features LibreOffice 5.2 and the update manager application now shows changelogs from enabled personal package archives (PPAs). “Network performance is a primary focus of this release, with updated versions of Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK), OpenVSwitch (OVS) and virtualization technologies, all able to handle critical application traffic for lower latency and greater throughput. Ubuntu 16.10 and the corresponding updates to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS further enhance Ubuntu’s position as the leading private cloud infrastructure operating system, with OpenStack Newton, DPDK, enhanced OpenVSwitch and LXD machine containers alongside regular KVM based VM guests. Ubuntu 16.10 previews Canonical’s device convergence vision.

OpenBSD 6.0 Officially Released

The OpenBSD project has announced the release of OpenBSD 6.0. The OpenBSD project focuses on providing code and documentation that are correct and of high quality. This has lead to OpenBSD being regarded as a highly secure and reliable operating system. The new release features New/extended platforms: for armv7 – EFI bootloader added, kernels are now loaded from FFS instead of FAT or EXT filesystems, without U-Boot headers, a single kernel and ramdisk are now used for all SoCs, Miniroot installer images include U-Boot 2016.07 with support for EFI payloads, vax removed. Many new and improved hardware drivers and support for hardware-reduced ACPI implementations, for ACPI 5.0 implementations, initial support for MSI-X has been added, the xhci(4) driver now performs handoff from an xHCI-capable BIOS correctly, W^X is now strictly enforced by default etc.. Updated versions of LibreSSL and OpenSSH are included as well and feature several security enhancements.

Creating a bootable USB key using a Un*x-like system:

    Some older systems may not be able to boot from USB keys or require
    changing boot priority.  Check your BIOS settings if you run into
    problems.

    First, you will need to obtain a local copy of the bootable filesystem
    image miniroot59.fs or install59.fs as described above.
    You should use the signify(1) and sha256(1) commands to verify
    the integrity of the images with the SHA256.sig file on the mirror site.

    Next, use the dd(1) utility to copy the file to the USB storage device.
    The command would likely be, under OpenBSD:
        dd if=miniroot59.fs of=/dev/rsdNc bs=1m

    where N is the device number.  You can find the correct device number
    by checking dmesg(8) when inserting the media.

    If you are using another operating system, you may have to adapt
    this to conform to local naming conventions for the USB key and
    options suitable for copying to a "raw" disk image.  The key
    issue is that the device name used for the USB key *must* be one
    that refers to the correct block device, not a partition or
    compatibility mode, and the copy command needs to be compatible
    with the requirement that writes to a raw device must be in
    multiples of 512-byte blocks.  The variations are endless and
    beyond the scope of this document.

    If you're doing this on the system you intend to boot the USB key on,
    copying the image back to a file and doing a compare or checksum
    is a good way to verify that the USB key is readable and free of
    read/write errors.

16 August 2016 – The ReactOS project is an open source operating system which attempts to be binary compatible with Microsoft Windows. The ReactOS project has released a new version, ReactOS 0.4.2. The new release improves compatibility with Windows applications via WINE and includes the ability to read and write with several Unix/Linux/BSD file systems, including ext, ReiserFS and UFS. “Beyond the usual updates to external dependencies such as Wine and UniATA, much work has gone into refining the experience of using ReactOS, especially with respect to the graphical shell and the file explorer. Perhaps the most user visible change however is the ability now to read from and write to several Unix file systems, namely ext family, ReiserFS, and UFS. Native built-in support for these file systems should make for considerably easier interoperability than the current out-of-box experience provided by Windows, and there is more to come in the future.

ReactOS 0.4.1 Released – The NT Kernel Family

Ziliang Guo has announced the availability of ReactOS 0.4.1, a minor release of the built-from-scratch operating system which tries to clone the design of the Microsoft Windows NT platform: “The ReactOS team is proud to announce the release of version 0.4.1 a mere three months after the release of 0.4.0. The team has long desired an increased release tempo and the hope is that this will be the first of many of faster iterations. Due to the brief period of time between the two releases, 0.4.1 is ultimately a refinement of what was in 0.4.0. That is not to say that there are no new features of course, and a few highlights of both categories are listed below: Activation Context – a fix that came in just a tad too late for 0.4.0, this resolved a problem in the loader that prevented applications depending on various versions of the MSVCRT library from working properly; BTRFS support – initial read and write support introduced via importing of the WinBtrfs driver; shell – general usability improvements such as properly rendering icons and improved folder views….

22/04/2016 – The OpenIndiana project, which is a continuation of OpenSolaris, has released a new version of the community-maintained operating system. The new release offers a number of improvements to package management and includes several package updates to such desktop applications as Firefox, Thunderbird and VLC. “New nlipkg zone brand was introduced, which behaves like old ipkg brand (i.e. it doesn’t check child and parent images for consistency). It’s possible to convert ipkg zone to nlipkg one. To do so, install system/zones/brand/nlipkg, change zone’s brand to nlipkg and remove /var/pkg/linked inside zone. Closed sysidtool which could be used to set initial system parameters on first boot and initialize zone’s configuration was replaced with sysding. All other packages from closed admin incorporation were also removed…

PC-BSD 10.3 – TrueOS Server 10.3 – The new release from 10.x branch

Kris Moore has announced the launch of a new stable PC-BSD release. The project’s latest version, PC-BSD 10.3, is intended to be the final release in the project’s 10.x branch and is based on FreeBSD 10.3. PC-BSD 10.3 uses the FreeBSD boot loader with GRUB offered as an optional alternative. UEFI support has been improved in the system installer and the operating system ships with Lumina 0.8.8 as one of the available desktop environments. “The PC-BSD team is pleased to announce the availability of 10.3-RELEASE! This is currently planned to be the last maintenance release in the 10.X series, and we are currently working hard on the upcoming 11.0. A very special thanks to all the developers, QA, translation and documentation teams for helping to make this release possible.” PC-BSD is available in two editions, the desktop edition and the TrueOS edition for servers.

The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE. This is the third release of the stable/10 branch, which improves on the stability of FreeBSD 10.2-RELEASE and introduces some new features. Some of the highlights: The UEFI boot loader received several improvements: It now follows /boot/config and /boot.config files, multi-device boot support works and command line arguments are parsed. Additionally, its framebuffer driver has been enhanced with GOP (Graphics Output Protocol) and UGA (Universal Graphics Adapter) handling, allowing to set the current graphics mode on systems using one of these methods. The OpenBSD project has announced the release of OpenBSD 5.9. The OpenBSD project focuses on providing code and documentation that are correct and of high quality. This has lead to OpenBSD being regarded as a highly secure and reliable operating system. The new release features W^X (write or execute) security for 32-bit x86 processors, many new and improved hardware drivers and support for installing OpenBSD on GPT partitioned hard drives. This release features a forked version of the “less” command and network stack improvements. Updated versions of LibreSSL and OpenSSH are included as well and feature several security enhancements.
